Rutgers University Libraries Celebrate Black History Month
The Libraries commemorated Black History Month with webinars, exhibits, and social media posts. Below are some highlights:
- African American History Resources: Julie Still discussed the Libraries’ rich and varied collections in African American history, including print, online indexes and collections, and archival sources.
- Who Was Paul Robeson?: John Powell examined the life of the Rutgers alum and activist for whom Paul Robeson Library is named.
- Underground Railroad Sites of Greater Philadelphia: Bart Everts explored some of the region’s Underground Railroad sites.
- Black History Month Display: Robeson Library featured a display of e-book titles (see below) by and about African Americans from the Libraries’ ProQuest Ebook Central database. Each book cover contained a QR code that viewers could scan to access the title.
- PHL17’s In Focus: John Maxymux discussed Black quarterbacks in the National Football League (NFL) and Super Bowl LVII, which featured two Black starting quarterbacks for the first time in NFL history.
- “History in the Huddle“: Rutgers–Camden interviewed John Maxymuk for their article about the first-ever Super Bowl matchup between two Black starting quarterbacks.

On Exhibit at Robeson Library: “Underground Railroad Sites of Greater Philadelphia”

Underground Railroad Sites of Greater Philadelphia is a new exhibit at the Robeson Library in Camden features notable Underground Railroad sites in the Philadelphia region, including The Peter Mott House in Lawnside, Mother Bethel AME Church in Philadelphia, and several locations along the newly created Upper Darby Underground Railroad Walking Trail in Delaware County.

The Underground Railroad was a network of pathways, homes, churches, and other structures where abolitionists like William Still assisted Black freedom seekers on their route north to free lands. The Philadelphia region was often the first stop in free territory for people escaping the horrors of slavery. The City of Philadelphia and surrounding communities in South Jersey and Pennsylvania are home to several sites that once served as safe harbors for self-liberated Black people, who were considered fugitives under United States law.

Curated by Robeson librarians John Powell and Bart Everts (who worked on the Upper Darby Trail as a member of the Township’s Historical Commission), this exhibit gives insight into the struggles of the 19th century and the role of allyship under systemic oppression.

Underground Railroad Sites of Greater Philadelphia is on display until September 26, 2022. Event & Exhibit Flyer Templates

These flyer templates are available to local units to help promote their upcoming events and exhibits. The templates are available in Word and Powerpoint, so they require no special software. We’ve tried to provide enough options and variations to allow some personalization and tailoring for specific locations and events. If you would like me to conduct any training on how to use these materials, please let us know. We also welcome any feedback and/or requests for variants of these templates.

Group Study Room Sign Templates

With the recent changes in how group study rooms are reserved, we have updated the signage templates with new QR codes. These are now available for libraries that are using the libcal service. If you have group study rooms that don’t use the libcal reservation system or other types of spaces that need signage, let us know. Scroll down on the Signage Templates page to find the new group study room signs.

Community Bulletin Board

“Wouldn’t it be great if there was a space where people from the Libraries could post notices for one another if they have an item for sale or are selling Girl Scout Cookies or are playing a local gig with their band?” Yes– this would be great. Introducing the Rutgers University Libraries Bulletin Board. This is an open space where you can post any type of notice you would like to share with your colleagues.
