Emily Mervis joined New Brunswick Libraries as library associate II at the Library of Science and Medicine in August 2017.
Jane Otto will retire from Central Technical Services effective July 1, 2018.
Prior to coming to Rutgers, Jane’s first professional position was at Library of Congress (LC) in the Optical Disk Pilot Program as a cataloger. Jane then spent the next 17 years of her career as a cataloger in UCLA’s prestigious Film and Television Archive, an internationally renowned visual arts organization that handles the preservation, study and appreciation of film and television.
In 2008, Jane joined the staff of Central Technical Services as Media and Music Metadata Librarian, and was awarded tenure in 2014. Jane’s notable accomplishments in this role include developing policies and procedures for new and emerging workflows. Jane was also very active with creating metadata for digital collections in RUcore.
One of Jane’s most significant achievements, which has had an impact universitywide, resulted from her work as chair of the Rutgers Senate’s Research and Graduate & Professional Education Committee (RGPEC) Open Access Subcommittee. Under Jane’s leadership, the Senate overwhelmingly passed an Open Access Policy Resolution in October 2012.
Jane’s title and work assignment changed in 2015 to Scholarly Open Access Repository Librarian to enable her to provide leadership and management for RUcore’s scholarship portal, SOAR (Scholarly Open Access at Rutgers). As a leader of the University Senate’s University-wide ORCID initiative, Jane was an integral member of the Rutgers University ORCID Implementation Working Group as well as the Rutgers University Libraries ORCID Outreach Working Group.
Please join us in congratulating Jane, who will now have more time to devote to some of her other passions, including her artwork, quilting, and riding her horse, Bo.

Bob began his career at the Libraries in 1975 as a voucher employee in the Cataloging Department while a student at Rutgers. In 1978, Bob was hired into his first full-time position as a library assistant in Serials and Government Documents at the Kilmer Library. He returned to the Cataloging Department in 1979 as a supervisor and became head of the Rapid Bibliographic Transfer Department (RBT), where he led a team of supervisors and staff devoted to the task of quickly cataloging new books with Library of Congress records. In 1998, Bob transferred into what was then known as “Systems” and assumed many new roles very well suited to his years of experience in cataloging and his vast knowledge of library automation, bibliographic record formats, and data migration. His expertise with Director’s Station made him the go-to person for very complicated statistical questions posed by our librarians. Bob’s been a critical part of the Symphony Support Team and is irreplaceable.
A retirement party is being planned for later this summer with details forthcoming. Please join us in congratulating Bob and wishing him well in his new chapter!
Ann Watkins will be retiring at the end of June.
Krista White, digital humanities librarian at John Cotton Dana Library, has been promoted to Librarian II.

In Memoriam:
Anne Butman who had worked in IIS for two decades before becoming a project manager in OIT passed away in her sleep on June 27. No more information is currently available. She is survived by her husband Jimmy and daughter Emily.
Carolyn Foote, a member of the Dana Library staff for over 30 years, passed away in June. Carolyn’s first job at Dana Library was as a student working in the circulation department and she became a full-time employee less than a year later. As a member of the URA-AFT, Local 1766, she was also engaged in professional activities outside the library. Joining as a charter member in 2007, she went on to serve four terms on the executive board and as chair of the URA’s Civil Rights Committee. In 2013, Carolyn became lead steward for the Newark campus. Her most recent roles included being a lead steward and executive board member for the 2016–2018 term. Remaining at the heart of her service was a commitment to ensuring that union members knew their rights about unemployment benefits. Carolyn will be greatly missed by her colleagues and friends at Dana Library. Our sympathies go out to her family for their sudden loss and we will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

Appointments & Retirements
Gary Golden, director of Paul Robeson Library, announced that he will retire on June 30, 2016. Gary started working at Rutgers in June of 1986, shepherding the Camden Library through many transitions—new technology; new building; a new name as the Paul Robeson Library; and, most recently, a $3 million dollar, four-year renovation that completed in 2015. Throughout these changes, Gary has maintained a steadfast eye on the student user experience, made smart financial and technological decisions, and created links to the Camden community. While this will, no doubt, be a loss for the Libraries, we wish him all the best in this next chapter and salute his many accomplishments on behalf of Rutgers University Libraries.
Awards & Honors
Kayo Denda is the recipient of the 2016 Career Achievement Award from the Women and Gender Studies Section of the ACRL. Kayo will be presented with the award at the WGSS program on Monday June 27th.

February 2016
Appointments & Retirements
Lila Fredenburg announced her upcoming retirement, scheduled for February 25, 2016. As we know, working in the Libraries is equal parts labor and passion and Lila has excelled in both throughout her career. In her role as executive director of administration, Lila is intrinsic to the day-to-day operations of the Libraries and, as a member of the cabinet and numerous other taskforces and committees, to our long-term strategic planning and development. Some highlights of her Rutgers career include converting the A&P process to online, developing diversity programs and search committee training, and serving on the University’s Compensation Committee and the Committee to Advance Our Common Purpose. Lila’s retirement is our loss in many ways, but will no doubt be a well-deserved respite and opportunity to spend more time with family and friends and in pursuit of her personal interests.
