October 2017

  • Francesca Giannetti and Krista White held editathons to bring the Rutgers community together to map geospatial data to help Puerto Rico recovery efforts. In New Brunswick, the event was so well attended, they had to move from the Digital Humanities Lab to the Pane Room!
  • Vengo machines are in at Alexander, Douglass, Carr, and LSM, offering earbuds, charging cables, power banks, and other supplies!
  • The Targum covered a recent lecture by John Haworth: “Rutgers libraries hold discourse on Native American art culture”
  • Remember the Missing Book flyers we asked you to make at the Picnic? Here they are in a new exhibit at Douglass Library!
  • The New Brunswick Music Scene Archive Panel event on September 8.
UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN REPORT
Vice president of information services and university librarian Krisellen Maloney With the last of the Welcome Days events now completed and the start of the fall semester fully complete, it is time to turn our attention to another annual tradition: the preparation of our annual budget request. While we regularly include data points to demonstrate that the Libraries make a difference, hard data about our impact on student success has been difficult to find. That’s what makes this news out of the University of Minnesota so exciting. They have completed a large, rigorous study—“The Impact of Academic Library Resources on Undergraduates’ Degree Completion”—to assess whether first-year students who used the library at least once during their first year were more likely to graduate or continue to be enrolled in four years (indicating progress towards degree completion). Here’s a quick summary of the results.
